Salary Calculation FAQs

Quick answers to common salary-related questions

Why is my take-home less than my CTC?

Your Cost to Company (CTC) includes many components that never reach your bank account: Employer PF contribution (3.67%), income tax, employee PF (12% of basic), professional tax, and other deductions. Typically, take-home is 65-75% of CTC for most employees.

Should I choose Old or New Tax Regime?

For 2025-26, New Regime is better if: 1) Your CTC is under ₹7.5L (zero tax after rebate), 2) You don't have home loan/HRA claims, or 3) Your total deductions (without 80C) are under ₹1.5L. Salaries above ₹15L often benefit more from Old Regime.

How is HRA exemption calculated?

HRA exemption is the lowest of these three: 1) Actual HRA received, 2) 50% of basic (metro) or 40% (non-metro), or 3) Your annual rent minus 10% of basic salary. You must submit rent receipts to claim this.

What's the PF limit and how is it calculated?

Employee PF is 12% of basic salary, but calculated only on first ₹15,000 of basic. So maximum PF deduction is ₹1,800/month (₹21,600/year). Employer contributes additional 3.67% (₹550/month) which is part of your CTC but not take-home.

How does NPS help in tax savings?

NPS gives two benefits: 1) 10%/14% of basic salary deduction under 80CCD(1), and 2) Additional ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B). For someone with ₹12L CTC, this can save ₹15,600-₹21,840 in taxes annually.
